PB3a - Nutritional Awareness

PB3a - Nutritional Awareness
Is controlling the food that’s put into your body important to you? Well, it should be. Foods play a huge role in the way we look and feel as human beings, but also influences our health dramatically. It can be the determining factor of acquiring a disease, chronic condition, or shortening your life. Food is an imperative part of living a healthy and happy life! So, I chose to analyse an article on Nutrition, and the likelihood of eating disorders across several professions, called Students of dietetics & nutrition; a high risk group for eating disorders?. My sole objective was to understand how the risks of these disorders vary among different professional groups, and derive a better understanding of how these disorders affect people’s health. By becoming more aware of the disorders caused from lack of Nutritional knowledge, it will make us more conscious about the way we eat and the potential risks of developing bad eating habits. Furthermore, translating this genre[Nutritional Eating Disorders] into two new ones that conform to specific age groups can tell us even more about the potential benefits and dangers of eating and make us healthier, smarter eaters.
For a genre translated from the original publication that conforms to a younger audience, a publication discussing the healthiest food choices for the young, developing brain and body would be extremely beneficial for kids to read. It would be educational and could benefit the lives of kids who are oblivious to the imperative nature of nutritional knowledge and application of the knowledge. An article from this new genre discussing the importance of healthy eating would be most effective if it first discussed the negative effects of eating unhealthy foods and provided relevant examples. Such examples could consist of pictures showing unhealthy, fatty body organs caused by unhealthy eating or visual, straight-forward, and easy to understand charts exemplifying the contrast between the mental performance of a healthy eater and a non-healthy eater with pictures of healthy and unhealthy food under the corresponding picture. The important aspect here is the use of visuals to allow a younger audience to understand the main ideas presented. Just as Important as showing the negative effects of unhealthy eating, the positive effects of healthy eating need to be made clear as well. An article of this genre could present examples of athletic performances enhanced by healthy eating, or pictures and diagrams of a healthy, functioning body to express the importance of healthy dieting. The main goal is to show kids that eating healthy and nutritious foods will benefit them in the long run, and educate them of what food choices are right and wrong.
In addition to the genre derived from nutrition and the likelihood of eating disorders across different professions conforming to a younger audience, I came up with a genre that would suite an older audience too. Once people are far past the stages of developing as humans, it’s important to focus on prevention and preservation of your body. The genre I came up with for an older audience that would conform to these necessities is foods that promote health preservation for older people. Unlike the other translated genre, this one is intended to provide older people with healthy food choices that support a functioning, balanced body. Many older adults are unaware of the health risks from poor diet, so an article from this genre would be extremely beneficial. This genre would possess some of the same conventions as the genre geared toward a younger audience like the use of visuals, but include more sophistication and statistics exemplifying the potential dangers of unhealthy eating. The readers of this genre will be more educated than the younger audience, so they will be able to interpret the meaning of these statistics and factual information. In addition, it would be beneficial for an article of this genre to include potential benefits of eating healthy in order to persuade the reader of its legitimacy and importance.
The two new genres derived from the original possess very similar conventions with respect intentions. They are both intended to strike awareness and persuade in their audience's benefit. These genres differ with content and obviously audience, which signifies the contrast in age groups. By translating the original genre into two new ones that have similar content, it makes the information presented conform to specific age groups more precisely which evidently makes them more effective.

  1. The way you formatted this PB was very unique and different from those I went through and read. You pulled your audience into it and you had a great hook! It was also very interesting to read how you would go about structuring and implementing your topic into two different genres. If you are going to make both of your genre translations into articles, I think it would be best if you looked into different magazines or online article sites and format them similarly. That would add uniqueness and creativity to your product. For example, there is a HEALTH Magazine which is mostly directed towards older women- it is your call if you want to focus on a more specific audience. Also, for the younger audience genre translation, you could refer to sites such as Buzzfeed, or for an even younger audience, to refer to famously known characters that promote healthy eating (like Popeye). I think if you implement your articles with recognizable formats that come from well-known magazines or websites, your WP would look much more distinctive and it would stand out.

  2. Jimmy Burns,

I’d like you to hone in on a more specific genre for your younger audience—after reading your post, I’m getting a feel that you have a kinda/sorta ideaaa… but not necessarily a genre. It sounds like you want it to be educational, and that’s super—what kinds of educational genres are out there for kids? There are bunch and probably even more than you’d imagine.

I also didn’t get a clear sense of what actual genre you want to create for your older audience. You mentioned education again and statistics and visuals… so if you want to include all those aspects, what kind of genre embodies all of that?

Also, the most important question you can ask yourself is: how will my new transformed genres relate back to the original genre (i.e., the scholarly piece) that you’re transforming? What is at the heart of that piece, and what would be most relevant for whatever genre it’s being transformed into?

  3. Yo good job James! I think you sound really motivated to write about this topic. However, I think that the genre you chose for the younger audience, I think it might be a little too much of an older audience genre it seems to me. Also, it took me a couple times to understand what genre you were going to write about. Not saying anything bad, but I think it might be good to be a little more clear when writing so that the readers know what it is they are reading. I also think that it is good that you are trying to be educational with your different genres, but I think for the younger audience genre, there might be a lot of other ideas that could appeal more to kids. But, they might be less educational. I don’t know if you want it to be educational or not. Anyways, I think that you have a good heading here James and I hope you have fun with your project!

  4. Burns! I love your topic and I feel like you can do a lot with it. As for the genre that you are trying to create for the younger people I feel like I do not know exactly what genre you are talking about and so maybe you can specify a little more what genre it is and an example of where it could be found maybe? I do also feel that your topic can work very well with other genres. A cool genre to consider would be something like a commercial using sports or famous people to attract them. Other than that I feel like you know exactly what you are talking about with your topic! good luck burns

  5. Nice work James I think you picked a really good topic for this project. Nutrition fits perfectly because it is an issue that is important for both younger and older audiences which will make your translations easier and more relevant. I think you have the right idea as far as how you will translate it, but you could definitely get more specific on exactly what genre you are choosing. For the younger audience, what kind of article are we talking about? Same question for the older audience. I think you may be confusing the idea of the article with the genre, which would be the article itself. If you can figure out exactly what genres you want to use I think you will be good to go!

  6. I think for your genre geared toward a younger audience, you could get a little more creative than just an article. A pamphlet may be a good way to convey all of the information, plus you would have lots of room for visuals! Nutrition is a great topic because so many genres about it already exist and you’ll have many examples to work with.Your main goal of conveying information and educating both the younger and older audience is clear. You definitely have the right approach here, you just need to get a little more specific about the type of genres you’ll be creating. Choosing the article you want to work with is a great first step — I have the feeling your ideas will all come together once you start analyzing it!
